The TVC5K “Run the Runway” is a unique 5K run/walk held on a closed runway at Cherry Capital Airport, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to run down the same path planes use to take off and land. Each year, the incredible team at TVC and Cherry Capital Airport make this event possible by allowing us to shut down a runway for the day. It’s a thrilling experience in a one-of-a-kind location that few people get to witness firsthand.

This event returns on Saturday, May 17th, 2025, from 9AM – 11:30AM. The race aims to raise awareness and garner support for our mission of providing free flights to medical destinations for families who are unable to afford commercial travel. Since 1991, volunteer pilots have donated over 8,000 flights to some of the best hospitals and treatment centers east of the Rockies. We’re proud to have served countless patients from Traverse City and Northern Michigan, and we’re working hard to make an even greater impact in the region.

The 2024 TVC5K sold out with 400 runners and multiple corporate sponsors, raising over $24,000 and even recruiting new volunteer pilots. This year, registration has opened up to 700 runners to accommodate even more participants.

In addition to the race, attendees will have the rare opportunity to get up close with planes and helicopters and interact with aviation professionals. On display will be the North Flight AeroMed helicopter, a Cessna 172, a floatplane from Northwest Michigan College’s Aviation Department, and emergency vehicles that serve to protect passengers and pilots at Cherry Capital Airport. The event will also feature a Women in Aviation booth and Civil Air Patrol representatives. Just across the ramp from the start of the race, the US Coast Guard base will have a UH60 Jayhawk helicopter on display.
